Perfumery Craft
Raw Materials
Raw materials are the individual ingredients a perfumer blends into a composition: naturals, synthetics and accords (also known as perfume bases).
Naturals are extracted from plants and other natural sources, such as bergamot oil, rose absolute, vetiver or vanilla extract. Synthetics are scented molecules made by chemistry, either copying a molecule found in nature or creating a new one via organic chemistry. Accords are pre-blended mixtures used as a single ingredient, such as an amber accord or a muguet accord. Most modern compositions combine all three.
