Note

A note is a single fragrance impression within a composition, classified as top, heart, or base according to how quickly it's perceived and how long it lasts on the skin.

Top notes are the first impression and fade fastest; heart (or middle) notes are more prominent as the top fades and form the core character; base notes are drydown and develop last and linger longest, often anchoring the whole composition. This is a simple view. From the formulation standpoint each note has one or few ingredients that have specific function in a formula such as basics, blenders, modifiers and fixatives. Perfumers build a Composition by layering notes considering their function and volatility property."
